Senate Healthcare Includes DXA Relief-Bill Goes to Conference

The United States Senate approved its version of H.R. 3590, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which included some relief for the DXA cuts. The reimbursement fix to DXA has now cleared another major hurdle, with the Senate approving the bill along party lines with a vote of 60 to 39. The DXA provision will set a floor on reimbursement for DXA for 2010 and 2011 at a national average of $98 while a study of patient access to care is conducted.

The next step has already begun in the legislative process as Conference Committees made up of key members of the House and Senate will resolve the differences between the House and Senate versions of the Health Care Reform bills.

Please take action by sending a quick email to members of the Senate on the DXA provision in H.R. 3590 and urging their support of DXA throughout the Conference Committee process.

As always, thank you again for all of your efforts on this important issue.

NIH Opportunities & Grant Information

College of CSR Reviewers

The NIH Center for Scientific Review has announced the creation of a "College of CSR Reviewers" to more readily match reviewers and applications. According to the CSR announcement, "Finding the best grant applications depends on getting the best experts to review them. This job will be easier now that CSR has created a new College of CSR Reviewers, which will help review NIH applications in a process similar to journal reviews. The goal is to proactively identify and 'enroll' reviewers so that CSR has a deep pool of expertise that can be readily matched to incoming applications." Please see this CSR Newsflash PDF for more information.

New NIH RFA: "Recovery Act Limited Competition: NIH Director’s Opportunity for Research in Five Thematic Areas"

NIH on December 28 issued a new RFA, titled, "Recovery Act Limited Competition: NIH Director's Opportunity for Research in Five Thematic Areas." The competition opens on February 15 and applications are due by March 15. About $80 million is expected to be available for awards under the RFA. According to NIH, "This program will support projects that address research endeavors in specific areas that will benefit from significant three-year funds without the expectation of continued NIH funding beyond this period. The research supported by the program should have high short-term impact, and a high likelihood of enabling growth and investment in biomedical research and development, public health, and health care delivery." The five thematic areas correspond to Dr. Francis Collins' earlier announced priorities: applying genomics and other high throughput technologies, translating basic science discoveries into new and better treatments, using science to enable health care reform, focusing on global health, and reinvigorating the biomedical research community. NIAMS Wants to Hear from You!

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) are very pleased with the many biomedical and behavioral research projects that have received support from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The NIH and NIAMS are very excited about their research community's participation in these unprecedented opportunities that will catapult scientific fields forward, and they want to share the impact that ARRA support is having on biomedical research.

As you know, the central goal of NIH's and NIAMS' ARRA-associated programs is the rapid distribution of funds to stimulate the economy, create and preserve jobs, and advance biomedical research. Please tell them about jobs retained or created; enhancement of your research by allowing new efficiencies, new directions, or additional resources; or expansion of your scientific team through new personnel or collaborations. The NIH and NIAMS wants to hear your stories about impact that are immediate or long-term, large or small. Share your ARRA stories using a Web form available from the new Web page, NIAMS ARRA Chronicles.
