New Gene Discovered for Recessive Form of Brittle Bone Disease

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health and other institutions have discovered the third in a sequence of genes that accounts for previously unexplained forms of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a genetic condition that weakens bones, results in frequent fractures and is sometimes fatal.

The newly identified gene contains the information needed to make the protein Cyclophilin B. This protein is part of a complex of three proteins that modifies collagen, folding it into a precise molecular configuration, before it is secreted from cells.

Cliff Rosen's Musculoskeletal Lab Hosts Congressional Visit

When the office of Representative Chellie Pingree called to congratulate him on a new ARRA-funded grant, Dr. Cliff Rosen's response was to invite the Maine Congresswoman to come see his lab at Maine Medical Center Research Institute. It took some creative schedule juggling, but a few weeks later Rep. Pingree came to MMCRI and spent an hour and a half touring the facility and talking to researchers in the Rosen Musculoskeletal Lab.

"Her visit was incredibly important," notes Dr. Rosen, a former ASBMR President. "We need lawmakers in Washington who are able to speak with conviction about the way we use federal funding, particularly ARRA funding." Dr. Rosen believes that her visit to MMCRI will help Rep. Pingree advocate for and promote biomedical research. He adds, "Any researchers with ARRA funding should pick up the phone and invite their congressional delegation to come for a visit. Legislators need to be thanked for their support, and see for themselves what we are doing with those funds."
