    The 2011-2014 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) Strategic Objectives outlined below were developed at a Strategic Planning Retreat in February 2011, in Washington, DC, USA. Participants to this meeting included the ASBMR Council, Committee Chairs and staff. Over the next three years, the ASBMR will focus its efforts on activities that address its four strategic objectives.

    Objective #1 - Increase Public and Healthcare Professional Awareness of Bone Diseases

    Key Initiatives

    • Expand outreach and education to clinicians and allied health professionals
    • Expand outreach to public
    • Develop and implement communication strategy

    Expected Outcomes

    • Greater public awareness
    • Improved clinical practice
    • Increased recognition of ASBMR resources

    Objective #2 - Expand ASBMR Leadership of the Research Agenda in Bone and Related Fields

    Key Initiatives

    • Outreach to skeletal muscle biologists
    • Outreach to other related fields
    • Outreach internationally

    Expected Outcomes

    • Increased collaboration with related fields
    • Closer ties with related organizations
    • Expanded membership

    Objective #3 - Expand Two-way Dialogue and Exchange of Ideas Between ASBMR and NIH Thought Leaders

    Key Initiatives

    • Disseminate information about NIH priorities and emerging opportunities
    • Engage with NIH and other U.S. government agencies in shaping the research agenda

    Expected Outcomes

    • Closer relationships with NIH and other government agencies
    • Greater opportunities to expand bone-related research

    Objective #4 - Invest in Our Research Future by Positioning Young Investigators for Success

    Key Initiatives

    • Offer interactive programs for young and senior investigators
    • Provide programs on the NIH grants process
    • Adopt successful mentoring models
    • Train senior members to mentor

    Expected Outcomes

    • Greater participation in networking and mentoring programs by young and senior investigators
    • More professionally successful young investigators
