    NBHA 20/20 Vision

The National Bone Health Alliance (NBHA) and Kaiser Permanente recently unveiled their "20/20 Vision" for reducing hip and other fractures by 20 percent by 2020 at a best practices sharing event at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Total Health in Washington DC last month. A key element in the proposal to decrease hip fractures includes the establishment of a fracture liaison service facilitated by NBHA within Medicare and other health systems. The service would assess patients for osteoporosis fracture and provide treatment and follow-up to manage the disease and prevent repeat fractures. ASBMR is one of the founding members of the NBHA. Its Governing Committee is chaired by ASBMR Immediate Past President Sundeep Khosla. Visit the NBHA website to learn more about the plan to reduce fractures by 2020.

EU Invests Nearly $10 Billion to Attract/Retain Scientists

Good news for scientists seeking work in Europe. The European Commission (EC) recently announced a plan to attract and retain researchers by investing €7 billion ($9.6 billion) in science over the next few years throughout the continent. The radical boost in capital, a 9 percent increase from last year, is expected to create approximately 174,000 jobs in the short term and 450,000 jobs total. As a part of the European Union’s Seventh Framework Program for research, technology and development (FP7), the continent will fund scientific research to “tackle the biggest societal challenges facing Europe and the world.” To learn more about the European Commission’s plan for research and innovation, including project announcements and funding information, visit the FB7 website.

Changes to NIH Financial Conflict of Interest Regulations – Key Highlights from Dr. Sally Rockey’s Webinar

Dr. Sally Rockey, NIH Deputy Director for Extramural Research, and colleagues held a webinar to discuss the recently published financial conflict of interest (FCOI) regulations on December 1, 2011. The webinar was largely an overview concerning the changes to the original 1995 regulations. Some key highlights from the webinar include: 1. The de minimis threshold for significant financial interests will now focus on aggregate interests from the previous 12 months, in contrast to the former regulations that required investigators to anticipate 12 months into the future. 2. In the absence of posting FCOI on the web, institutions will have to respond to all requests for such information within five days. 3. An institution will have to file annual updates on each case of FCOI it identifies, until the conflict is eliminated. 4. Investigators will be required to receive FCOI training prior to beginning NIH funded work and to participate in quadrennial refresher courses. The training requirement will be instituted on August 25th, 2012. 5. The new policies will also apply to trainees (e.g. NRSA fellows) directly receiving NIH funds. For more information about the 2011 Revised Financial Conflict of Interest Regulations, visit the FCOI website.

NIH Therapeutics for Rare & Neglected Diseases Program Announces Next Round of Drug Development Projects

Researchers will begin drug development projects for rare and neglected diseases that include potential treatments for a musculoskeletal disorder, a cognitive dysfunction disorder, a virus that affects the central nervous system of newborns, a parasitic worm infection, a form of muscular dystrophy and a rare lung disease. The six new projects are part of the National Institutes of Health's Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Diseases (TRND) program. Congress created the TRND program to facilitate the development of new drugs for rare and neglected diseases. TRND bridges the wide gap in expertise and resources that often exists between basic research discoveries and the development and testing of new drugs in human subjects. TRND and its collaborators focus on the optimization and pre-clinical development of new drugs, as needed, advancing them from Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigational, new-drug approval to first, in-human clinical trials. For more information on TRND visit the NIH website.
