ASBMR Issues Statement on ACP’s New Osteoporosis Guidelines
Date: May 11, 2017
ASBMR has issued a statement to the media on the American College of Physicians (ACP) new osteoporosis guidelines. ASBMR applauds ACP’s effort to simplify the treatment of osteoporosis for primary care physicians to lead more physicians to screen and treat patients to prevent fractures. However, the recommendations fall short in key areas that could help inform patient treatment decisions. The ASBMR Professional Practice Committee is reviewing the guidelines and we will work with other organizations to provide recommendations for further clarification and guidance.
We believe that the ACP’s new guidelines have the potential to help address what is now being recognized as a crisis in the under-treatment of osteoporosis. They also open up opportunities for increased collaboration among specialists and primary care physicians to address the challenges outlined in our Call to Action that 39 other medical organizations have joined, pledging to take actions to improve the screening, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.
