By virtue of its size, diversity and active relationship with working scientists, FASEB is a respected source of information and influence for policymaking legislators and federal agencies. FASEB represents over 84,000 scientists and comprises 21 member societies. The ASBMR joined FASEB in 1997. Working scientists develop and deliver FASEB's public affairs positions. Member societies select representatives to serve on the FASEB Board of Directors, its Public Affairs Executive Committee (PAEC) and Science Policy Committee (SPC). Members of the ASBMR - through these committees and others and individually - have long played an active role in FASEB. ASBMR's FASEB Board member is Elizabeth Shane, M.D., ASBMR members and the ASBMR Executive Director also serve on FASEB Committees. This facilitates FASEB's governance, while helping ASBMR benchmark its programs in finance, publications, conferences, awards, science policy and advocacy. FASEB, like ASBMR, is committed to nurturing and developing future generations of basic and clinical scientists, fostering the integration of clinical and basic science, and facilitating the translation of science to health care and clinical practice. Updates on FASEB activities and FASEB publications, including the educational Breakthroughs in Bioscience publication: Bone Builders: Preventing and Treating Osteoporosis, can be found at www.faseb.org or www.fasebj.org, respectively.
