About ASBMR
Committees and Committee Charges
General Charges to All Committees
- To ensure that Committee Chairs and members are rotated in accordance with
Council guidelines.
- To recommend candidates to the ASBMR Nominating Committee for new members.
- To ensure appropriate communication among its members and with Council.
- To learn and share knowledge of ASBMR's history, mission, policies and procedures
and to help ensure that activities
are congruent with ASBMR's mission, the continuity of its programs, when indicated,
and the maintenance of its policies and procedures.
- To submit business plans for new programs/expenditures and comply with ASBMR's
policies for review and approval before implementation.
- To work under the direction of Council and in partnership with staff.
- To ensure compliance with the ASBMR budget, policies and timelines.
- To establish yearly goals and objectives, to review them periodically and
to report progress and activities in writing to the Council three times a
year.

Advocacy Committee Charges
- This committee is charged with advocating on behalf of ASBMR members for
research funding mechanisms, and researcher-friendly policies and procedures
affecting research funding, in concert with staff and relevant coalitions
and partners.
- This committee should reconsider its strategy annually and focus on U.S.
federal sources of research funding, particularly NIH.
- This committee should focus its efforts on Capitol Hill in terms of providing
testimony and educational material, and at federal research funding institutions
in terms of suggesting scientific direction for new grants and funding mechanisms.
- This committee should strive for close relationships with the NIH Institute
directors and staff, with ASBMR committee members/ad hoc members serving as
liaisons.
- This committee should strive for a good understanding of:
- where and how ASBMR members' research is being funded
- what appropriate grants are available and what types of mechanisms of
grants exist
- This committee should help review/transmit this information regularly to
the membership to continue ASBMR's role as the premier resource for grant
information in bone and mineral science.
- This committee should serve as a resource for international members in providing
guidance about the advocacy process.

ANNUAL MEETING (PROGRAM) COMMITTEES
Program Committee

Program Committee Charges
- This committee is charged with planning, organizing and delivering the scientific
program of the Annual Meeting, in close consultation with the President and
staff.
- This committee should be mindful of the importance of the Annual Meeting
to the Society as the premier meeting in bone and mineral science and as the
chief source of revenue to the Society.
- This committee should assist staff in marketing the meeting by advising
on groups to target and sessions to highlight.
- This committee should consider the diverse membership of the ASBMR and its
diverse meeting attendance and strive for a balance of basic and clinical
content, a variety of formats, and strive for innovation by becoming knowledgeable
about other meetings in the bone field.

Ancillary Program Committee Charges
- This committee is charged with reviewing ancillary applications, programs
and policies to help ensure a balanced ancillary program at the ASBMR Annual
Meeting.
- This committee recommends changes or additions to ASBMR ancillary policies,
if necessary.
- This committee advises Council, the Executive Committee and Staff on any
policy issues that may arise with regards to Industry-Supported Symposia and
Working Groups.

AWARDS COMMITTEE

This committee, appointed annually by the president, is charged with considering
award nominees, reviewing their award packets, seeking new nominees when needed,
and selecting the best nominees for ASBMR awards.
- This committee should also advise the Executive Committee and Council about
issues and policies in need of consideration regarding current or potential
awards.
- This committee is charged with keeping its membership and deliberations
secret and with passing on nominations for consideration by the next year's
committee.

Education Committee Charges
- This committee should consider the educational needs of all ASBMR members
and both Annual Meeting and other venues for provision, including Annual Meeting
sessions, other meetings, slide kits, websites, web casting, videotapes, CD-Roms,
and other formats.
- This committee should consider opportunities for patient and physician education
and recommend programs with the submission of attendant business plans.
- This committee should advise the Executive Committee and Council on potential
partnering societies and companies as well as opportunities for educational
programs for scientists, allied health professionals, and other interested
groups.
- This committee should monitor educational activities of relevant basic societies
and recommend new programs with proposed business plans.

Ethics Advisory Committee Charges
- The Ethics Advisory Committee (EAC) is charged with providing guidance and
interpreting the ethical requirements and standards of the Society.
- The EAC assists in the review of ethical issues as requested by Officers,
Council, committees, editorial boards, task forces, and ASBMR staff.
- The Committee proposes modifications to the Ethics and Policy Guidelines
on an as-needed basis.

Finance Committee Charges
- This committee is to oversee the financial affairs (profit and loss statements,
summary of financial position, investment reports, projections, and annual
audit) of the Society and advise on budget considerations and fiscal strategies
which reflect ASBMR's long-range goals and short-term needs.
- This committee also reviews business plans and makes recommendations to
Council.

Membership Development Committee Charges
- This committee should consider the needs of clinical and basic members,
as well as potential future members.
- This committee has two broad responsibilities:
- To expand the ASBMR membership roster
- To develop member loyalty to and participation in ASBMR
- Both require close working relationships with many, if not all, of the other
ASBMR committees and deep knowledge of the needs and interests of ASBMR members
that can be translated into programs and services.
- The committee is specifically directed to:
- nurture and develop young and mid-career investigators
- recruit new young investigators to the Society and, involve them in the
organization through committee or task force work, etc.
- consider other society benefits, membership categories and marketing approaches
and recommend appropriate actions, with proposed business plans
- The committee should promote retention of current members.
- This committee should obtain, track and report on membership demographics.
- The committee will provide mentoring and networking opportunities for young
investigators.
- This committee will provide career development programs for entry-, mid-
and senior- level investigators.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

Nominating Committee Charges
- This committee, appointed annually, is responsible for recommending a slate
of nominees for Council, President-elect, and Secretary-Treasurer (in appropriate
years) for membership vote, according to ASBMR policies and procedures.
- This committee is charged with making recommendations to Council for committee
members, FASEB representatives, and other representatives, as requested.
- This committee is charged with reviewing all nominations and self-nominations
and scoring them, as well as seeking additional nominations when needed, before
making its recommendations to Council.
- This committee follows the policies, procedures and timelines regarding
candidate recommendation in terms of gender, geographic origin, degree, research
area/practice environment, etc.

Professional Practice Committee Charges
- This committee has the responsibility for identifying the needs of ASBMR
members who are in academic or community clinical practice.
- The committee should work closely with the Advocacy, Education and Program
Committees to serve this component of the ASBMR membership in advocacy efforts,
educational products, the Annual Meeting program, and other venues.
- This committee should monitor educational activities of relevant clinical
societies and research and recommend new programs with proposed business plans.

- This committee is charged with oversight of the policies and procedure of
all publications owned or sponsored by ASBMR, including the Journal of
Bone and Mineral Research and the Primer.
- This committee is responsible for approving ASBMR Primer and JBMR
Associate Editor appointments.
- This committee should strive to advise the Executive Committee, Council
and staff about new opportunities to further the ASBMR mission, raise its
profile, and contribute to the ASBMR's revenues through its publications.

Science Policy Committee Charges
- This committee is charged with considering long-term and short-term policy
questions referred by ASBMR Council, other Committees or ASBMR staff or self-identified
and with developing business plans for, and when approved, planning and helping
to develop background materials, surveys and meetings, as needed, along with
policy recommendations.
- This committee is responsible for prioritizing policy issues and focusing
on areas critical to the Society and where effort is likely to have an impact,
such as increasing debt-relief programs for researchers, especially physician-scientists.
- This committee should track the effect of policies in which it has involvement
in, such as the impact of the CSR reorganization.
- This committee should work with coalitions to help maintain a career track
for clinical investigators and basic researchers.

- At least once each year, the Council, committee chairs, and staff constitute
the ASBMR Strategic Planning Committee for the purpose of reviewing progress
toward the organization's goals and considering new strategies for reaching
them.

- This committee is charged with mentoring women in the Society with respect
to career advancement, academic promotions, combining a career with family,
etc.
- This committee should nominate women as speakers, for awards, as chairs
of sessions, for the elected positions of ASBMR, for editorial boards, NIH
study sections, reviewing manuscripts, etc.
- This committee should organize an informational/social function at the
ASBMR annual meeting with an invited speaker who will lead discussion on current
issues regarding the career advancement of women.
- This committee should develop and maintain a web page linked to the ASBMR
website that serves as a resource for information related to women’s
careers in biomedical science.
- This committee should monitor the success of the committee by measuring
the: a) participation of women in ASBMR symposia and committees, b) number
of committee nominees who receive awards or are speakers or are on the Society
ballot, c) attendance at the informational/social function, and d) use of
the web page.
