Statement on ASBMR’s Ethics and Industry Interaction Principles

    August 26, 2015

As the world’s largest and most respected professional, scientific and medical society that brings together clinical and experimental scientists involved in bone, mineral and musculoskeletal research, the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) takes its responsibility seriously to promote the highest level of scientific rigor and evidence-based recommendations.

Improving the health and well-being of people suffering from bone and musculoskeletal diseases through discovery is the primary mission and priority of ASBMR. Evidence-based decision-making, guidelines and recommendations about prevention and treatment are critical to improve translation of scientific discoveries into clinical practice.

Like many scientific, professional and medical societies, the majority (85%) of the Society's revenue comes from membership dues, fees paid to attend the Society's annual meeting and subscriptions and royalties from ASBMR publications. ASBMR also accepts grants from the federal government, foundations, industry and donations from its members to support its mission.

To ensure that the Society adheres to the highest ethical practices, ASBMR has an ethics advisory committee, consults with experts in health care ethics and regularly reviews its practices with regard to managing potential conflicts of interest. In addition, the ASBMR’s Guiding Principles of Interaction with Industry drive its activities and undergo continuous review and refinement.

ASBMR leadership also must adhere to a rigorous ethics policy that ensures complete transparency and safeguards against influence by outside entities with respect to its philosophy, decision-making, recommendations, endorsements or initiatives.

ASBMR is committed to scientific integrity in all its activities and has deliberately and thoughtfully  created and enforced policies and processes to avoid conflicts of interest, maintain transparency, and support the rigorous review of evidence that together maintain our commitment to being a leader in the field of bone, mineral and musculoskeletal research.
