Venue

The Advances in Skeletal Anabolic Agents for the Treatment of Osteoporosis Scientific Meeting will be held May 24-25, 2004, at the Hyatt Regency Bethesda in Bethesda, Maryland, USA.

Meeting Program

Meeting Organizers

  • Andrew F. Stewart, M.D., Chairperson, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
  • Robert Nissenson, Ph.D., VA Medical Center, San Francisco, California, USA
  • Clifford J. Rosen, M.D., St. Joseph Hospital, Bangor, Maine, USA

This small, two-day meeting will review the current status of the field and explore future directions for clinical and basic research in anabolic agents for metabolic bone diseases. Advances in the understanding of osteoblastic bone formation, and the explosion in identification of many new potential signaling molecules and transcriptional targets, have made this an exciting time for researchers and clinicians alike.

In addition to the invited speaker program, there are two Young Investigator Oral Sessions, reserved for young investigators. Each of these sessions has four oral presentation slots which have been assigned to the top ranking young investigator abstract submitters.

All other abstracts have been assigned to a poster session.

Session Topics

  • Exercise, Calcium and Vitamin D as Skeletal Anabolic Agents
  • Skeletal Anabolism: Transcription Regulation and Signaling
  • LRP5, Wnt and High Bone Mass
  • Estrogens and SERMs
  • Growth Hormones and Growth Factors
  • PTH and PTHrP
  • Miscellaneous Anabolic Agents

Basic and clinical questions addressed will include:

  • How do exercise, calcium and vitamin D function as skeletal anabolic agents?
  • What do we know about transcriptional regulation and signaling in skeletal anabolism?
  • How do estrogens and SERMs function as anabolic agents?
  • What are the role of growth hormones and growth factors?
  • How do PTH and PTHrP function clinically and on a basic level?
  • What are the risks and side effects?
  • How might anabolic agents be used to promote bone healing?
  • What does the future hold for miscellaneous anabolic agents under investigation?

Abstracts

The abstracts submission deadline for this meeting was Wednesday, February 18, 2004, at 5:00 p.m. Central Standard Time.

Program Assignment Notification
Abstracts have been assigned to either a Young Investigator Oral Session or to a Poster Session. There are two Young Investigator Oral Sessions, reserved for young investigators. Each session has four oral presentation slots which have been assigned to the top ranking young investigator abstract submitters. All other abstracts were assigned to a poster session, as long as space permits. Please see below for poster and slide information.

Travel Grants for Young Investigators

A minimum of 15 Young Investigator Travel Grants will be awarded for this meeting. The Organizing Committee will select award recipients based on the abstract’s scientific merit. All abstracts will be scored using a “blind review” system. Although nominations will not be accepted for Young Investigator Travel Grants, individuals should indicate eligibility on the abstract submission form by selecting the submission category Young Investigator Abstract Submission.

These Young Investigator Travel Grants recognize young investigators for their excellence in research related to skeletal anabolic agents for the treatment of osteoporosis. In addition to the scientific merit of the abstract, the following eligibility requirements apply:

  • The individual must be the first and presenting author.
  • The individual must be within five years of completion of a Ph.D. or residency training (for M.D., D.D.S., or their equivalent). The five years of eligibility are defined to extend from the end of the calendar year of the graduation date or residency completion to the submission deadline date (February 18, 2004).
  • Also eligible are students and trainees who have not yet graduated, earned their degrees or completed their residencies.

The award includes a $1,000 honorarium, which will be provided to the recipient on-site at the ASBMR Advances in Skeletal Anabolic Agents for the Treatment of Osteoporosis Scientific Meeting. All Young Investigator Travel Grant recipients must present their abstracts at the meeting.

ASBMR's Expectations of Presenters

Through ASBMR meetings, the Society wishes to promote excellence in bone and mineral research. Toward that end, ASBMR expects that all presenters participating in the ASBMR Advances in Skeletal Anabolic Agents for the Treatment of Osteoporosis Scientific Meeting will provide informative and fully accurate scientific and other information. Furthermore, the ASBMR expects that all presentations at this meeting will reflect the highest level of scientific rigor and integrity.

The content of speaker presentations, slides, and reference materials must remain the ultimate responsibility of the faculty. The planning, content and execution of speaker presentations, slides, abstracts and reference materials should be free from corporate influence or control. Industry-based and supported presenters should provide full disclosure of their relationship with the respective company(ies).
