Under the new budget, the federal research investment will decline in real terms for the fourth consecutive year.

Now more than ever, it’s imperative that each of us become effective research advocates in our own communities. Let your local leaders know the significant role scientific research plays in your area—the importance of research, possibilities of discovery, economic value to the region/country, etc.  The ASBMR provides on its website, tools you can use in your advocacy endeavors to stress the importance of bone and mineral research funding visit www.asbmr.org for more information.

New JBMR Director of Publications
The ASBMR is pleased to announce the appointment of David Allen as the new Director of Publications. Dave has worked in ASBMR's Publications Office since June 2000 and served as Managing Editor from August 2005 to the present. In his new role as Director of Publications, he will provide leadership for the publication of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, the transition of its new Editor-in-Chief, the 7th Edition of the Primer on Metabolic Bone Diseases and Disorders of Mineral Metabolism, and the development of new online and print communications.

ASBMR 2008 Ballot—Due January 14th
The 2008 ASBMR ballot has been mailed. Elected nominees will begin their terms in the fall of 2008. Voting for ASBMR Officers and Councilors is an important benefit of active membership, and we urge you to be on the lookout for your ballot and return it promptly. USBJD Young Investigator InitiativeDeadline: January 15th
The United States Bone and Joint Decade (USBJD) offers a program for early-career, clinical investigators that provides a series of workshops and mentoring opportunities for young investigators. These programs afford young investigators the chance to work with experienced researchers in the field who assist them in securing funding and provide them invaluable survival skills as they pursue their academic careers. This workshop series is open to promising junior faculty, senior fellows or postdoctoral researchers, all of whom are nominated by their department or division chairs. Investigators selected to take part in the program attend two workshops, six or twelve months apart, while working with faculty in between to develop their grant applications.

The next deadline is January 15, 2008. For more information on this program, including an application timeline and how to apply, visit the USBJD website at www.usbjd.org.

Career Enhancement Awards—Deadline: February 29th
The ASBMR Career Enhancement Awards (CEAs) are intended to foster the academic potential and careers of scientists in the bone and mineral field. The recently updated program now offers three types of awards:

  • The new General Research Support Award—This award is aimed at fostering initial research that could assist the awardee in generating future funding from a major funding source.
  • Collaborative Research Support Award—The intent of this award is to enhance the applicant’s career development and foster sustained collaborative research endeavors.
  • Sabbatical Research Support Award—This award differs in that the awardee must document how the award will provide diminished teaching and administrative responsibility during the award period.

Awardees will receive up to $50,000. The application deadline is Friday, February 29, 2008. For more information about the awards, including eligibility requirements and how to obtain an application form, please visit the ASBMR website.
