News
ONJ Report to be Published in the October Issue of JBMR
An increasing number of reports in the medical literature suggest that the use of bisphosphonates, especially intravenous bisphosphonates, is associated with osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). To address this, ASBMR convened an international, multidisciplinary task force of experts (physicians, oral surgeons, dentists, and scientists) to examine the data and facilitate an exchange of information critical to addressing this issue and guiding the research agenda. Several NIH Institutes (NIAMS, NIDCR, NCI) were also represented.
The final consensus document will be published in the October issue of the JBMR. The document has been endorsed by the ASBMR, The Endocrine Society, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, The International Society of Clinical Densitometry, the International Bone and Mineral Society, the National Osteoporosis Foundation, the Paget Foundation, Osteoporosis Canada, the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.
Special thanks to ONJ Task Force Co-Chairs Sundeep Khosla and Elizabeth Shane for leading this endeavor and all the task force members for their hard work over the past 12 months. For more information about the ONJ Task Force, please visit the ASBMR website at www.asbmr.org.

Committee Highlights
Ancillary Program Committee
The ASBMR Ancillary Program Committee, chaired by Dr. Thomas Clemens, develops the Ancillary Program comprised of the ASBMR Working Groups and the Industry Sponsored Symposia. These meetings convene in evening sessions in conjunction with the ASBMR 29th Annual Meeting. The Committee reviews each ancillary program application to ensure that the content is consistent with ASBMR's goals and is compliant with ACCME guidelines. During the Annual Meeting, members of the Ancillary Committee attend the Working Group and ISS sessions to monitor for any commercial bias. The Committee advises ASBMR's Council, the Executive Committee and Staff on policy issues that may arise with regard to Industry-Supported Symposia and Working Groups and if necessary, recommends changes or additions to ASBMR ancillary policies.

Members in the News
ASBMR Member Mark Horowitz on Representing ASBMR at Other Meetings
"At the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Immunologists (AAI) held in Miami, Florida, USA, in May 2007, I had the privilege of representing the ASBMR and co-chairing a session along with ASBMR member Yongwon Choi, PhD. The session was a symposium entitled “Osteoimmunology” and featured talks by Yongwon Choi, PhD, Mary Nakamura, MD, Joe Lorenzo, MD, and Marco Colona. The symposium was a great success, with more than 100 scientists in attendance. The symposium speakers, Dr. Choi, and I all enjoyed the meeting; I would also like to thank ASBMR for its support of this important initiative. It is an honor to be able to represent this Society." - Mark C. Horowitz, Ph.D., ASBMR Councilor 2006-2009
