John Haddad Young Investigators’ MeetingRegister Today!
The ASBMR and Advances in Mineral Metabolism (AIMM) invite you to attend the AIMM/ASBMR John Haddad Young Investigators’ Meeting that will be held April 8–12, 2008, in Snowmass, Colorado, USA. The goal of this conference is to discuss important and evolving concepts in bone biology and clinical bone disease in a small and informal group setting. Conference attendees include a mix of established and new investigators who enjoy the intimate meeting setting and the long midday breaks for interacting and networking with other attendees. You won’t want to miss out on this unique opportunity.

The conference room only holds 80 people, so register early! For more information on this meeting or to obtain a registration form, please visit www.cor.uams.edu.

USBJD Young Investigator InitiativeDeadline: January 15th
The United States Bone and Joint Decade (USBJD) offers a program for early-career, clinical investigators that provides a series of workshops and mentoring opportunities for young investigators. These programs afford young investigators the chance to work with experienced researchers in the field who assist them in securing funding and provide them invaluable survival skills as they pursue their academic careers. This workshop series is open to promising junior faculty, senior fellows or postdoctoral researchers, all of whom are nominated by their department or division chairs. Investigators selected to take part in the program attend two workshops, six or twelve months apart, while working with faculty in between to develop their grant applications.

The next deadline is January 15, 2008. For more information on this program, including an application timeline and how to apply, visit the USBJD website at www.usbjd.org.

Career Enhancement AwardsDeadline: February 29th
The ASBMR Career Enhancement Awards (CEAs) are intended to foster the academic potential and careers of scientists in the bone and mineral field. The recently updated program now offers three types of awards:

  • Collaborative Research Support Award — The intent of this award is to enhance the applicant’s career development and foster sustained collaborative research endeavors.
  • Sabbatical Research Support Award — This award differs in that the awardee must document how the award will provide diminished teaching and administrative responsibility during the award.
  • The new General Research Support Award — This award is aimed at fostering initial research that could assist the awardee in generating future funding from a major funding source.

Winners will receive up to $50,000. The application deadline is Friday, February 29, 2008. For more information about the awards, including eligibility requirements and how to obtain an application form, please visit the ASBMR website.

Passport Notice to U.S. Citizens
With the ASBMR 30th Annual Meeting taking place outside the United States next year, the ASBMR would like to remind all U.S. citizens that they are required to have a valid U.S. Department of State-issued passport to enter Canada. With the U.S. government’s new, stricter requirements, the ASBMR encourages U.S. members without a passport to begin their application process early. For more information, including specific details and how to apply for a passport, please visit the government’s passport website at http://travel.state.gov. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to attend the premiere meeting in bone and mineral science!

Increasing Minority Participation in Clinical Research
The ASBMR is proud to endorse a new white paper published by the Endocrine Society entitled “Increasing Minority Participation in Clinical Research.”  The paper recommends initiatives to ensure minority participation in clinical research and offers recommendations on establishing guidelines to insure future clinical trials represent a broader range of participants. The ASBMR is a proud endorser of this document.  To read the full report, please visit The Endocrine Society website at www.endo-society.org.

Meeting on Targeting Bone Remodeling for the Treatment of Osteoporosis Highlights
The ASBMR held another successful meeting at the Targeting Bone Remodeling for the Treatment of Osteoporosis meeting held December 6-7, 2007, in Washington, DC, USA. Over 375 registrants from all over the world attended this two-day meeting. The program featured 33 invited speakers, including two oral presentations from the top scoring posters selected from among 23 poster and 22 Young Investigator Award poster recipients, who shared their latest research findings into how bone modeling and remodeling has been applied to the treatment of osteoporosis.  The meeting organizers are preparing a summary of the proceedings for submission to the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.

The plenary format of the meeting gave attendees a chance to focus on one specific topic over the course of two days. John Bilezikian, Steven Goldring, Barbara Kream, and Toshio Matsumoto meet with Santa Claus at the Bone Remodeling Welcome Reception.
ASBMR Meeting attendees mingle and view table top exhibits during coffee breaks and between sessions. Attendees review the Program & Abstracts book to discuss the research being presented over the two-day Meeting.

Evaluate the ASBMR Bone Remodeling Meeting
If you attended the Meeting on Targeting Bone Remodeling for the Treatment of Osteoporosis in Washington, DC, USA, please take a moment to help enhance the planning of future ASBMR topical meetings by evaluating the Bone Remodeling Meeting at www.zoomerang.com. Your input is invaluable and helps the planning of future ASBMR meetings.  Please do not delay: the site will only be available until Thursday, January 3, 2008.

The next ASBMR topical meeting on Frontiers in Skeletal Research: Bone, Fat and Brain Connections will take place in the spring of 2009 in Washington, DC.
