News

U.S. House Passes Spending Bill to Increase NIH Budget by $620 Million
The U.S. House of Representatives passed a spending bill on January 31, 2007 that includes an increase in the NIH budget of $620 million for FY'07. This will reverse a projected decline in new NIH research project awards and support an additional 500 research project grants, 1,500 first time investigators, and expand funding for high-risk and high-impact research. It is anticipated that the Senate will pass the bill by February 15 and that the President will sign it. This is a tremendous accomplishment, and the ASBMR would like to thank everyone who participated and helped advocate for science.

President's FY'08 Budget Proposes Flat NIH Funding
On February 5 the President released his FY 2008 budget. His request for the National Institutes of Health
(NIH) calls for $28.9 billion, an increase of 0.8% over the $232 million estimate for FY 2007. If enacted it would be the 5th year in a row that NIH funding failed to keep pace with biomedical inflation (3.7%), but  the net would be even less, since it includes $200 million to cover the Global AIDS fund. That would result in a net increase to the NIH budget of only $32 million, one tenth of a percent. ASBMR plans to work with FASEB and other biomedical research societies to advocate for an increased level of funding.

ASBMR Election Results
We are pleased to announce the results of the 2007 ASBMR Election: Marc K. Drezner, M.D. (United States) was elected President-Elect and will serve as President of the ASBMR during the 2008-2009 term. The new Councilors elected for 3-year terms are: Meryl Leboff, M.D. (United States), Laurie McCauley, D.D.S., Ph.D. (United States), and Stuart Ralston, MBChB, M.D. (United Kingdom). All will assume their roles on Council at the end of the ASBMR 29th Annual Meeting, which runs September 16-19, 2007, in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. Members also voted to approve the proposed bylaws change that will allow for better continuity in the office of Secretary-Treasurer.

ASBMR Call for Leadership Nominations—Deadline: April 4th
Want to get more involved? Then please consider nominating yourself or encouraging other ASBMR members to nominate themselves for one or more ASBMR leadership opportunities! This is a great opportunity to take on a more active role in your Society.

In the fall of 2007, new positions will become available on Council for President-Elect, Secretary-Treasurer Elect and Councilor (three positions), as well as on several programmatic committees, including the Ancillary Program, Education, Finance, Membership Development, Professional Practice, Publications, and Science Policy Committees. Council and Committee members all serve 3-year terms. Charges for all committees can be found on the ASBMR website.

The ASBMR strives for diversity with respect to Council and Committee membership (i.e. specialties, geographic locations, MDs and PhDs, academic, clinical practice or industry affiliation, gender and age) and specifically encourages international members and young investigators to nominate others or self-nominate.

For more information on how to apply or support a nomination, please visit the ASBMR website. All nomination materials must be received in the ASBMR Business office by Wednesday, April 4, 2007.

Thank you for your participation in this important process. We value your interest in serving your Society and advancing the field of bone and mineral metabolism!

2005 Career Enhancement Award Winner Testimonial

Roberta Faccio, Ph.D.

"During my graduate and postdoctoral training, my scientific activity was mainly oriented toward bone cell biology and bone remodeling, with particular emphasis on regulation of osteoclast activity. As a new Assistant Professor, starting my own laboratory, I wanted to orient my efforts towards developing new bone therapeutic targets and analyzing them in an in vivo model. The ASBMR career enhancement award helped me to expand my skills into a translational field by learning new technologies in a medically relevant in vivo study model, i.e., skeletal metastasis. I thank the ASBMR for giving me a valuable opportunity to expand my expertise into tumor biology which I believe is fundamental to solidify my independent scientific career, and to provide me with research tools to be more competitive in acquiring extramural funding."

The next Career Enhancement Award deadline is Wednesday, February 28, 2007.

Clifford Rosen, M.D., will serve as the ASBMR representative for the ISCD 2007 PDC for Adults, July 20-22, 2007, in Lansdowne, Virginia, USA. Congratulations to both of them!

FASEB Receives 2007 Distinguished Service Award
The National Postdoctoral Association has awarded FASEB the 2007 Distinguished Service Award in recognition of its sustained contribution to improving the postdoctoral training experience. Receiving this award would not have been possible without the help of ASBMR members Philip Osdoby as Chair of the Careers and Training subcommittee of the FASEB Science Policy Committee and Nicola Partridge as former Vice-President for Science Policy of FASEB. Congratulations to FASEB and everyone who made winning this award possible.
