Letter from the ASBMR President

Steven R. Goldring, M.D.

It has been a busy time for ASBMR and as we start a new year, I would like to share with you some of the recent accomplishments of the Society and what we have to look forward to in the upcoming year.

In December, ASBMR celebrated the success of its meeting on Contemporary Diagnosis and Treatment of Vitamin D-Related Disorders which took place at the Crystal Gateway Marriot in Arlington, Virginia, USA. Over 400 researchers from around the world attended the two-day meeting that brought together both clinical and basic investigators working in this field. ASBMR proudly awarded 20 Young Investigator Awards to the top abstract submitters, including 3 Young Investigator Oral Presentations. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend this meeting and to the Program Committee for their hard work and for organizing such an outstanding scientific event.

Preparations are well underway for the ASBMR meeting on Targeting Bone Remodeling for the Treatment of Osteoporosis, December 6-7, 2007, at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC, USA. John Bilezikian, M.D. has taken on the role of Program Committee chair and Toshio Matsumoto will serve as co-chair. The membership of the organizing committee is in the process of being finalized. Please continue to check the ASBMR website for more information on this meeting as it becomes available.

With the ASBMR 29th Annual Meeting planned for September 16-19, 2007 in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA less then a year away, Program Committee Co-Chairs Drs. Juliet Compston and Harald Jueppner are currently hard at work on the scientific program. The four day meeting features the Louis V. Avioli Memorial Lecture, which will be given by Tatsuo Suda, D.D.S., Ph.D., on Contributions to Osteoclast Biology from Japan and the Gerald D. Aurbach Memorial Lecture which will be presented by Sir Michael Berridge, FRS, on Calcium Signaling in Health and Disease. In addition, we will sponsor a debate by Socrates Papapoulos, M.D and Ego Seeman, M.D., FRACP on Excessive Suppression of Bone Remodeling by Antiresorptive Agents is Harmful to the Skeleton. The program is in its final stages of preparation and promises to provide the highest quality of clinical, translational and basic science research in the bone field. We have worked diligently to develop programs that will provide financial incentives for attendees to help reduce the cost of travel to Hawaii, including travel grants and reduced student and in-training registration fees. Please see below for more information about these important incentives and program information. I look forward to seeing you in Honolulu!

Finally I want to thank the ASBMR Council, Committee Chairs and Staff who are all working hard for the Society and are constantly trying to develop new programs to better serve you. If you have any suggestions or comments, please email us at asbmr@asbmr.org. We would love to hear from you!

I look forward to working with all of you over the coming year!

Sincerely,

Steven R. Goldring, M.D.
ASBMR President

Committee Highlights

ASBMR Archives Committee
The ASBMR Archives Committee has been working on several projects central to preserving the history of the Society for future generations. The Committee has obtained copies of all Society publications, some early correspondence and other memorabilia, such as photographs, for preservation in the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Archives. Additionally, in order to effectively preserve the developments of the ASBMR over the years, all Society past-presidents have been asked to submit their thoughts (via a short letter or audio tape) about the most pivotal events to occur during their presidency. These memoirs will be used to assist the committee in the development of a written history of the ASBMR. The Committee has also been collecting and summarizing the highlights for the first ten Annual Meetings of the Society, including the abstracts that were considered ground breaking in the field at the time. The results of this project will be made public at a later date.

Do you have something to contribute to the ASBMR Archives? We welcome your input and participation. Please contact the ASBMR Business Office at asbmr@asbmr.org.

Young Investigator Perspective: How the Annual Meeting Has Furthered My Career

Leanne Saxon, Ph.D.

"I have been attending the ASBMR meetings for the past six years and throughout the years, the meetings have helped to enhance and further my career. I first attended the 22nd ASBMR Annual Meeting in 2000 which was held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and it was there that I met a future employer, Professor Charles Turner. Three years later at the 25th Annual Meeting in 2003 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, I met my current employer, Professor Lance Lanyon. Attending the ASBMR meetings has not only helped give me fantastic job opportunities, but it has also given me the privilege to collaborate and share ideas with top scientists and make close friends from around the world. A recent highlight was receiving the ASBMR Young Investigator Award at the 27th Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. To be given this accolade after years of hard work was particularly satisfying. Recently, ASBMR has given me the honor as serving as a member of the newly created Young Investigator Subcommittee aimed at encouraging Young Investigators to be more involved with the Society. I hope that this will provide young investigators with numerous unique opportunities to help shape their careers in research. I am truly grateful for the opportunities that the Society has presented to me throughout the years and I look forward to the future."
Leanne Saxon, Ph.D.

NIH Grant Opportunities and Notices

The ASBMR is pleased to highlight the following announcements and grant opportunities from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH):

News
The NIH would like to remind you that after February 2007, all R01 grant applications will go electronic; no more paper applications will be allowed. Other changes include a change in the application form and the use of the application form from the specific Funding Opportunity Announcement in the NIH Guide. For more information, please visit the NIH website at http://era.nih.gov/.

The NIH would like to make you aware of its Fiscal Operations Plan for 2007. In a time where there is an increase in the number of applications and applicants for grant support and a flat budget with no inflationary adjustments, the NIH is taking steps to manage its portfolio of investments in biomedical research. Even in these difficult financial times, NIH is committed to strengthening core areas of vulnerability, such as the ability of new investigators to compete for support in these difficult financial times, and protecting our investment in well established investigators with little or no other significant support. In addition, NIH is adjusting the number of competing Research Project Grants (RPG) that will be awarded, with the goal of stabilizing to the extent possible the yearly variation in number of awards that are made. Please visit the NIH website to views its fiscal policies for 2007.
