Steven R. Goldring, M.D.

Letter from ASBMR President, Steven Goldring

Dear Colleagues,

As the 29th Annual Meeting draws near, I would like to update you on recent ASBMR activities.

With the ASBMR 29th Annual Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, September 16-19, 2007, less than three months away, I am very pleased with the exceptionally positive response to our Call for Abstracts and the outstanding quality of science that will be presented at this year’s meeting. A total of 1,883 abstracts were submitted. Particularly gratifying was the final count of 829 abstract submissions from individuals qualifying as young investigators. The total abstract submissions exceeded the numbers from the past two years and the young investigator abstract submissions are twice what they were in 2006. For the first time, international abstracts outnumbered U.S. submissions, with 53% of abstracts coming from international investigators, compared with 45% last year. We also have seen a substantial rise in the number of abstracts submitted from investigators from Asia, Australia and South America. I am confident that this year’s Annual Meeting will continue to deliver the most outstanding science in the field. Abstract notification letters were sent earlier this month to all abstract submitters, and details of the official scientific program are available on the ASBMR website at www.asbmr.org. Don’t forget to pre-register by Thursday, July 19th to take advantage of the discount registration rates.

Total Number of Abstracts Submitted between 2004 and 2007 Regional Breakdown of 2007 Abstract Submissions

For the second straight year, ASBMR is partnering with the Endocrine Fellows Foundation (EFF) to offer the Fellows Forum in Metabolic Bone Diseases that will occur in Honolulu, one day before the ASBMR 29th Annual Meeting on Saturday, September 15, 2007. The Forum is designed for fellows who are training in either basic bone biology or clinical aspects of metabolic bone diseases and provides airfare and lodging to attend the event.

Planning is underway for the ASBMR topical meeting, Targeting Bone Remodeling for the Treatment of Osteoporosis, December 6-7, 2007, at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC, USA. The Abstract Submission Site and Instructions are available at www.asbmr.org. We encourage you to share your original research and submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation by Tuesday, September 4th. Young Investigator Awards are available for the top-ranked abstracts submitted by young investigators.

Finally, over the past few years, the leadership has strived to increase ASBMR’s interactions with related organizations. We have been proactive in the development of our relationships with other societies, national and international, to expand awareness of the ASBMR in the United States and abroad. To this end, we are working with sister societies in several ways, from advocating for policy change at the U.S. government level to co-sponsoring presentations and symposia at a number of meetings.

I would like to thank the ASBMR Council, Committee members and staff who are all working hard for the Society. Again, if you have any suggestions or comments, please e-mail us at asbmr@asbmr.org. We want to hear from you!

I look forward to seeing you in Hawaii!

Sincerely,

Steven R. Goldring, M.D.
ASBMR President

Committee Highlights

Why serve the ASBMR? Testimonial from ASBMR Science Policy Committee Chair, Larry Suva
"As a 'once' young investigator (many years ago in Australia), my mentor, Professor Jack Martin, instilled in his colleagues and students the importance of contributing to the ASBMR Annual Meeting. I attended my first Annual Meeting in 1988 and haven’t missed a meeting since. I have also had the chance to serve the ASBMR in a number of roles, most recently as chair of the Science Policy Committee (SPC). The SPC is an active committee that represents investigators across the Society. The SPC enjoys active e-mail communication with members, ad hoc members and other ASBMR committees, in order to best serve our membership and fulfill the committee charter. In addition, we work closely with the ASBMR Advocacy Committee and recently worked together to develop the Advocacy/ Science Policy ASBMR advocacy brochure, developing the document "Burden of Musculoskeletal Disease in the United States" along with the United States Bone and Joint Decade (USBJD) and provided guidance regarding proposed changes at the National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review. In particular, the SPC was recently deeply involved in the intelligent design vs. evolution controversy, helping to develop the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) website and educational slide set (www.evolution.faseb.org) which I personally consider a major accomplishment. The SPC strives to support science policy issues of importance to both the U.S. and international members. Undoubtedly, being able to participate in the ASBMR and serving the membership has provided me with an important chance to give back to the Society that gives so much to all its members. I am deeply honored to have had the opportunity.”-Larry J. Suva. Ph.D., University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
