Volunteers Needed to Serve as NIH CSR Reviewers
The U.S. National Institutes of Health's (NIH's) National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) is seeking experienced bone scientists who would be willing to serve as study section members of ad hoc reviewers. To maintain balance and diverse study sections, NIAMS is particularly interested in assistance from experienced principal investigators who are recognized leaders and experts in the field of bone and mineral research.
The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) is asking its members to please recommend any individuals you believe qualified and willing to serve on NIH study sections, including yourself, to the ASBMR Business Office. ASBMR will collect the names and biosketches and forward them to the ASBMR CSR Advisory Group for review. The biosketch form can be found on the ASBMR website. ASBMR will submit a list of recommended individuals to NIAMS. NIAMS plans to share the information ASBMR provides with the NIH Center for Scientific Review, which also is looking for experienced investigators who are interested in contributing to the review of grant applications.
Please email your biosketch form to Earline Marshall at asbmr@asbmr.org by Monday, May 21, 2007.

2006 Bridge Funding Grant Award Winner Testimonial
"Through a small 18 month start-up grant from the UK Arthritis and Rheumatism Campaign (ARC), we obtained very exciting data implicating abnormal osteocytic sclerostin secretion in the pathogenesis of the trabecular bone sclerosis seen in hip osteoarthritis and also the osteoporosis of hip fracture. This award will enable us to continue this work vigorously while we seek continuation funding from the ARC at their next awards deadline. The award will also underpin the career of a very promising post-doctoral scientist." - Jonathan Reeve

Travel Grants Available for Minority Students to Attend 29th Annual Meeting!
For more than 20 years, the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) has supported oung investigators through the Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) Program. FASEB, in partnership with the U.S. National Institute of General Medicine Sciences (NIGMS), is offering travel grants to minority students at the undergraduate through postdoctoral fellow levels to attend the ASBMR 29th Annual Meeting, September 16–19, 2007, in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. A “minority” is defined by the NIGMS as under-represented individuals in biomedical or behavioral research belonging to a particular ethnic or racial group. Nationally, these individuals include, but are not limited to, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, and natives of the U.S. Pacific Islands. Please note that grant applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
There are two types of awards available: the Faculty/Mentors Grant and the Poster/Oral Presenters Grant. For more information about both of these awards including specific eligibility requirements and to download an application, please visit the FASEB MARC Program website.
Young Investigator Perspective: How the Annual Meeting Has Furthered My Career
 |
| Mischaela R. Rubin, M.D. |
"I have been attending the annual ASBMR meeting since 2001, and as a young investigator, I always find it to be the focal point of my year in terms of new ideas, invaluable guidance and important encouragement. After each meeting I feel invigorated by the exciting exchange of ideas and eagerly return to pursue new directions for my projects. At my poster sessions I met other researchers who gave me new insights about my studies; often these were well-established senior investigators who were eager not only to offer guidance in their areas of expertise, but also to explore the possibility of collaboration in future research. Those impromptu discussions led to joint projects and publications that would not have otherwise ensued. I have also met other young investigators at the annual meetings who have shared critical advice gleaned from their own experiences about developing one’s career. At last year’s SBMR, I participated in the “Women’s Event,” where we shared experiences and discussed issues that young female investigators often face. I have been fortunate to receive a Young Investigator Award, which was a tremendously rewarding acknowledgment of my hard work and a resounding message of encouragement for the future. Most recently, I have become involved in the Young Investigator Subcommittee, whose goal is to enhance the role of and the benefits to young investigators in the ASBMR. Undoubtedly, participating in the ASBMR Annual Meeting is a terrific opportunity to enhance one’s career as a young investigator.”- Mischaela R. Rubin, M.D., Columbia University
Abstracts Now Being Accepted for Meeting on Targeting Bone Remodeling for the Treatment of Osteoporosis ASBMR is sponsoring a two-day meeting on Targeting Bone Remodeling for the Treatment of Osteoporosis, on December 6-7, 2007, in Washington, DC, USA. This meeting will highlight the exciting new opportunities created by recent insights into the cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating bone remodeling.
The Abstract Submission Site and Instructions are now available on the ASBMR Website! Everyone is encouraged to submit an abstract and the top-ranked young investigator abstract submitters are eligible to receive an ASBMR Young Investigator Award. The abstract submission deadline is Tuesday, September 4, 2007. For the latest information regarding this meeting, please visit www.asbmr.org.

Cliff Rosen Appointed to NIAMS Council
Cliff Rosen, M.D., ASBMR member and former President, has been appointed to serve on the National Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Advisory Council. The Advisory Council is a congressionally mandated NIH peer review group that meets throughout the year to provide advice to NIAMS and makes recommendations on research proposals. Dr. Rosen is currently the Director of the Maine Center for Osteoporosis Research at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bangor, Maine, USA.
“This gives the Society an opportunity to provide insight into the work of NIAMS and to be able to advise and work directly with them in terms of direction of research. Our goal is to work as closely as we can with the institute that funds bone research and find out how we can aid that process.” - Cliff Rosen, M.D.
