News
Letter from ASBMR President, Steven R. Goldring, M.D.

Dear Colleagues,
As my term as ASBMR President comes to an end at this year’s Annual Meeting in Honolulu, I would like to extend a special thanks to the ASBMR leadership team, including Executive Committee members Elizabeth Shane, Barbara Kream, Keith Hruska and Marc Drezner, ASBMR Councilors and Ann Elderkin, our Executive Director, and the ASBMR staff. It has been an honor to work with this dedicated group. During the past year, the Society has continued to offer a wide variety of programs and services to our community. We also have developed several new initiatives. I would like to recap some of the initiatives of the past year, as well as look ahead to the future.
ASBMR 29th Annual Meeting
Registration for the meeting is strong and we are looking forward to the Annual Meeting delivering the most outstanding science in the field. I would like to thank the 2007 Program Co-Chairs, Juliet Compston and Harald Jueppner, who have done an outstanding job planning the scientific program for the meeting. I also would like to thank the ASBMR staff for their dedication and hard work. Without their commitment and support, a successful meeting would not have been possible To encourage the involvement and participation of our community of young investigators, we initiated a new travel grants program for this year’s annual meeting. The program was a resounding success, with the awarding of over 800 grants to young investigators from around the world.
ASBMR Topical Meetings
Planning continues for the December topical meeting, Targeting Bone Remodeling for the Treatment of Osteoporosis. This two-day meeting will be held December 6–7, 2007, in Washington, DC, USA. I would like to thank John Bilezikian and Toshio Matsumoto, who are serving as Program Committee co-chairs, and Teresita Bellido, Sundeep Khosla, Thomas Martin, Socrates Papapoulos and Robert Recker of the Organizing Committee for all their hard work and commitment. The meeting will explore recent insights into the cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating bone resorption and formation and will integrate a broad spectrum of the most exciting new clinical, translational and basic science research in the field.
ASBMR is already planning the next topical meeting for the spring of 2009, “New Frontiers in Skeletal Research: Bone, Fat and Brain Connections.” More information about this meeting will be forthcoming!
Publications Highlights
The Journal of Bone and Mineral Research (JBMR) continues to publish the leading science in the bone and mineral field with a current impact factor of 6.527. Our present Editor-in-Chief, John Eisman, will end his term at the end of this year, and I am pleased to announce that Tom Clemens has been chosen as the next Editor-in-Chief of the JBMR. He will begin his term in January, 2008.
Additionally, work on the Seventh Edition of the Primer on the Metabolic Bone Diseases and Disorders of Mineral Metabolism has already begun under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Clifford J. Rosen. The new Primer will be expanded to include chapters addressing compliance with osteoporosis treatment and ethnic differences in bone mass and quality. The new edition will be available in mid-2008.
ASBMR Grants Programs
ASBMR continues to offer two successful grant programs that benefit our members. The Career Enhancement Awards (CEAs) support investigators early in their careers to help advance their training. The four recipients of this year’s $35,000 awards will be announced at this year’s Annual Meeting. The deadline for next year is February 29, 2008.
The ASBMR Bridge Funding Grants assist mid-level and senior investigators, with a history of research productivity and external research funding, who have encountered an interruption in funding. Successful applicants are eligible for up to $50,000 each. This year we have provided funding for ten grants. The next deadline for applications is November 30, 2007.
We encourage each of you to look into these programs to assist you in your careers.
ASBMR Task Force on Bisphosphonate-Associated Osteonecrosis of the Jaw
The ASBMR task force, established in June 2006, has completed its report that is currently available on the JBMR Online as a WebFirst publication. It will be published in the October issue of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research (JBMR). I would like to thank Task Force co-chairs Sundeep Khosla and Elizabeth Shane, the entire task force, and Associate Executive Director Doug Fesler for their dedication and outstanding contributions to this project.
ASBMR Co-Sponsorship of International and National Meetings
Since 2006, the ASBMR has worked to develop relationships with other national and international societies, to expand awareness of the ASBMR in the United States and abroad. We have made considerable progress by co-sponsoring a number of meetings and sessions at meetings with other societies.
- Second Annual Endocrine Fellows Foundation-ASBMR Forum on Metabolic Bone diseases for Fellows in Training, September 15, 2007, Honolulu, Hawaii.
- Proteus Syndrome Workshop, September 27-28, 2007, Bethesda, Maryland, USA.
- European Calcified Tissue Society (ECTS), May 24 – 28, 2008, Barcelona, Spain: ECTS and ASBMR have agreed to a series of three debates on clinical topics, alternating between ASBMR and ECTS meetings. The first debate will be at the ASBMR 29th Annual Meeting, September 16– 19, 2007, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA: Excessive Suppression of Bone Remodeling by Antiresorptive Agents: Fact or Fiction?. The second debate will be at the ECTS Meeting, May 24 – 28, 2008, Barcelona, Spain: Vitamin D. The third debate will be at the ASBMR 30th Annual Meeting, September 12-16, 2008, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, topic to be determined.
- Sociedad Española de Investigación Ósea y Meatabolismo Mineral (SEIOMM), October 16-19, 2007, Valencia, Spain: Post-Transplantation Bone Disease.
- Societa Italiana dell’Osteoporosi del Metabolismo Minerale e dell Malattie dello Scheletro (SIOMMMS), November 14, 2007, Florence, Italy: Cardiovascular Disease and Osteoporosis.
- 2nd International Conference on Osteoimmunology: Interactions of the Immune and Skeletal Systems, June 8-13, 2008, Rhodes, Greece. ASBMR will provide travel grants for selected young investigators to attend the meeting.
ASBMR Advocacy and Science Policy Efforts
ASBMR continues to work with the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) and the National Coalition for Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases (the “Bone Coalition”), to advocate for increased U.S. government funding for research. We also continue our collaborations with the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) on addressing changes proposed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to decrease payments for dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The DXA task force recently met with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) Acting Deputy Administrator Herb Kuhn to express its concerns.
Looking Ahead
As my tenure as ASBMR President comes to a close, I look forward to initiatives that are already underway for next year, including the ASBMR’s 30th Annual Meeting in Montréal, Québec, Canada.
It has been a pleasure serving you as ASBMR President. I know that President-Elect Barbara Kream will continue to advance the mission of the ASBMR and I look forward to working with her. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you over the past year.
Sincerely,
 |
