Young Investigator Perspective: How the Annual Meeting Has Furthered My Career

Mishaela R. Rubin, M.D.

"I have been attending the annual ASBMR meeting since 2001, and as a young investigator, I always find it to be the focal point of my year in terms of new ideas, invaluable guidance and important encouragement. After each meeting, I feel invigorated by the exciting exchange of ideas and eagerly return to pursue new directions for my projects. At my poster sessions, I met other researchers who gave me new insights about my studies; often, these were well-established, senior investigators who were eager not only to offer guidance in their areas of expertise, but also to explore the possibility of collaboration in future research. Those impromptu discussions led to joint projects and publications that would not have otherwise ensued. I have also met other young investigators at the annual meetings, who have shared critical advice gleaned from their own experiences about developing one’s career. At last year’s ASBMR, I participated in the “Women’s Event,” where we shared experiences and discussed issues that young female investigators often face. I have been fortunate to receive a Young Investigator Award, which was a tremendously rewarding acknowledgment of my hard work and a resounding message of encouragement for the future. Most recently, I have become involved in the Young Investigator Sub-Committee, whose goal is to enhance the role of and the benefits to young investigators in the ASBMR. Undoubtedly, participating in the annual meeting is a terrific opportunity to enhance one’s career as a young investigator. " - Mishaela R. Rubin, M.D., Columbia University
