News & PublicationsASBMR Supporting New Efforts in Biomedical ResearchSociety Congratulates FASEB for Office of Research Integrity Grant Award; Promotes Close Examination of Potential Conflicts & Their Impact on Scientific Research
Washington, DC (July 26, 2006) The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) is showing their support for new efforts in biomedical research, as they congratulate the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) for their recent grant award from the Office of Research Integrity. The award enables FASEB to raise awareness of conflict of interest issues on the part of researchers and to develop more standard practices for conflicts of interest management in biomedical research. The efforts supported by this grant will continue the work presented in the FASEB report Shared Responsibility, Individual Integrity: Scientists Addressing Conflicts of Interest in Biomedical Research, and reinforce the Federation's position as a leader in protecting scientific integrity and the public interest.
ASBMR strongly supports the close examination of potential conflicts and their impact on scientific research. The recently convened ASBMR Task Force on Scientific Publishing examined current regulations in place for reporting the results of industry supported scientific research. Association presidents and journal editors considered modifications to existing submission requirements and reached consensus to recommend that their respective journals and organizations support the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Principles for Protecting Integrity in the Conduct and Reporting of Clinical Trials (www.aamc.org/research/clinicaltrialsreporting/start.htm). This support will prove to be another positive step towards assuring complete and unbiased reporting of clinical trial results.
“While Task Force members acknowledged that journals are ultimately dependent upon the integrity of submitting authors,” said ASBMR President Elizabeth Shane, M.D., “they agreed that supporting the AAMC Principles, and requiring industry sponsors and authors to verify that authors had full access to study data upon which a submission was based, will increase transparency and help promote the value of clinical trials jointly conducted by academic and industry scientists.” ### The ASBMR is the foremost professional, scientific and medical society for
the promotion of bone and mineral research and the translation of that research
into clinical practice. To learn more, visit the ASBMR website at www.asbmr.org.
