Washington , DC (September 10, 2007) – The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research ( ASBMR) announced the appointment of Thomas Clemens, Ph.D. as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, a monthly scientific journal. Clemens will replace John A. Eisman, MBBS, Ph.D. on January 1, 2008, for a five-year appointment as Editor-in-Chief. Appointed to the post for his outstanding research and strong leadership qualities, Clemens currently serves as the Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology Director at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

“Tom Clemens’ knowledge and professional experience made him an ideal candidate for the editorial position with the JBMR,” stated Steven R. Goldring, M.D., President of ASBMR. “ His enthusiasm for the journal and his bold vision for its future—including expanding the journal’s scope to include such new areas as regenerative medicine and gene therapy as well as rethinking the journal’s print design and Web presence—will insure that the journal remains the leading source of scientific knowledge in the field of bone and mineral research.”

In addition to his post at UAB, Clemens directs the Howard Hughes Medical Institute graduate fellowship program and is a researcher at the VA Birmingham Medical Center. He is also the principal investigator for several federal- and military-funded research projects currently ongoing at UAB and the VA hospital. Clemens earned his doctoral degree in biochemistry from the University of London, England, in 1980.

The Journal of Bone and Mineral Research (JBMR) , now in its 22nd year of publication, provides a forum for papers of the highest quality pertaining to all areas of the biology and physiology of bone, the hormones that regulate bone and mineral metabolism, and the pathophysiology and treatment of disorders of bone and mineral metabolism. The JBMR is the top-ranked journal in its field, with an impact factor of 6.635 and is published by ASBMR in Washington, D.C. and the Durham, N.C. office.
