Washington, DC (March 1, 2007) – The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) elected Marc K. Drezner, M.D. to serve as its President for the 2008-2009 term. He will assume the position of President-Elect on the ASBMR Council in the fall. “Dr. Drezner is a proven leader with a wealth of experience in research and management …who will bring to the office a dedication to innovation and inclusiveness,” said current ASBMR President Steven R. Goldring, M.D. in announcing election results. Dr. Drezner brings scientific expertise and leadership experience to ASBMR. He is the associate dean for clinical and translational research, and professor of medicine and chief of the Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Section at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison. He is also director of the new interdisciplinary Institute for Clinical and Translational Research. His current research includes the pathophysiological basis of vitamin D-related bone disorders in humans, such as X-linked hypophosphatemia and tumor-induced osteomalacia, the identification of and physiological function of the phosphatonins, and the efficacy of antiresorptive and anabolic agents in postmenopausal osteoporosis. Prior to working at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Drezner served as endocrinology section head and director of the endocrinology training program and professor of medicine at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. A long-standing member of ASBMR, Dr. Drezner has contributed as both editor-in-chief of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research and as secretary-treasurer on the ASBMR Council.
