GATA4 Regulates Estrogen Receptor-{alpha}-Mediated Osteoblast Transcription

Mol Endocrinol. 2011 May 12. [Epub ahead of print]

In this paper the authors identified GATA4 as a transcription factor that is expressed in osteoblasts and is directly regulated by 17β-estradiol. ChIP assay demonstrated a close proximity of GATA4 and estrogen receptor (ER) alpha binding to the promoters of a number of genes that were specifically expressed in osteoblasts. In addition, knockdown of GATA4 reduced the recruitment of ER alpha to DNA. These results implicate GATA4 as a pioneer factor for the recruitment of ER alpha to the promoter regions of osteoblast-specific genes.
