Date: August 19, 2015
The Gideon A. Rodan Excellence in Mentorship Award is given annually in recognition of outstanding support provided by a senior scientist who has helped promote the independent careers of young investigators in bone and mineral metabolism. The 2015 ASBMR Gideon A. Rodan Award will be presented to Mitchell Schaffler, Ph.D., at the ASBMR 2015 Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington, USA on Saturday, October 10, 2015.
Mitchell B. Schaffler, Ph.D., is City University of New York and Wallace H. Coulter Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the City College of New York. He has made significant research contributions in the areas of bone biomechanics, bone fragility and osteocyte biology. Dr. Schaffler’s most recent research examines how osteocytes coordinate bone remodeling of wear and tear of microdamage in bone and in high bone remodeling states in the adult such as estrogen loss and disuse. Over the last 25 years, he has trained four-dozen doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows whose research continues to advance the bone and mineral research field.
