Congratulations to the 2013 ASBMR William F. Neuman Awardee John A. Eisman, MBBS, Ph.D. , FRACP. Dr. Eisman is Director, Clinical Translation & Advanced Education, and former Director of Bone Biology (1984 to 2012), Garvan Institute of Medical Research; Staff Endocrinologist, St. Vincent’s Hospital; Professor of Medicine (Conjoint), University of New South Wales; and Associate Dean, Clinical Leadership & Research, School of Medicine Sydney, University of Notre Dame Australia. Dr. Eisman has made many important contributions in both basic and clinical research. His dedication and commitment to excellence has led to major advances in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, the genetics of osteoporosis, the assessment of fracture risk and strength and the molecular mechanisms of action of vitamin D. Dr. Eisman has been an outstanding mentor to more than 30 Ph.D. students, numerous MDs and post-doctoral fellows and is published in nearly 275 peer-reviewed scientific articles and reviews with 19,000 citations. Furthermore, his studies have contributed greatly to the final goal of not only understanding the pathogenetic mechanisms of osteoporosis, but also in how to treat this multi-faceted disease.
