Gary Stein Awarded 2013 ASBMR Gideon A. Rodan Award

Gary S. Stein, Ph.D., Professor and Chair of Biochemistry and Co-Director of the University of Vermont Cancer Center for Basic Translational Research, is this year’s Gideon A. Rodan Excellence in Mentorship Award winner. The award recognizes an outstanding senior scientist who has helped support the independent careers of young investigators in the bone and mineral metabolism field. Along with maintaining a robust research career, publishing more than 850 research papers, Dr. Stein has trained more than 150 graduate students, postdoctoral and clinical fellows.
At least 20 of his 80 postdoctoral fellows went on to become academic leaders in the bone field, while the remainder took on professional careers in industry and education. Most recently, as director of the University of Vermont Cancer Center, Dr. Stein has set up a new research group consisting of 20 students and post-doctoral investigators. Known for his enthusiasm, informed guidance, dedication and unwavering open-door policy, Dr. Stein has made his mark on the bone field not only as a cutting-edge investigator, but as a valuable trainer of the next generation of research leaders.
Stein and the other 2013 Esteemed Awardees will offer their insights and career advice at the ASBMR 2013 Annual Meeting session: Success in Research: Leadership Lessons from 2013 ASBMR Esteemed Awardees.
