Senator Arlen Specter, Passionate Advocate for Research Funding, Passes at 82

Senator Arlen Specter, venerated statesman and supporter of government investment in research funding, passed away early this week.
Research!America Chair John Edward Porter and CEO Mary Wooley praised Specter’s commitment to research funding in a press release Monday. “Specter’s leadership in generating critical support for medical and health research is a testament to his dedication to improving the health of all Americans and securing our position as a global leader in science and innovation.”
Specter doubled the National Institutes of Health budget over five years and supported the inclusion of funding for the NIH and other health organizations in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. He received Research!America’s Legacy Award in 2009 and the Edwin C. Whitehead Award for Medical Research Advocacy in 2000.
