Thomas Clemens, Ph.D., Receives 2013 Louis V. Avioli Esteemed Award

Congratulations to the 2013 Louis V. Avioli Esteemed Awardee Thomas Clemens, Ph.D. This award honors an ASBMR member for his or her fundamental contributions to bone and mineral basic research. Dr. Clemens is currently Director of Research and Lewis Cass Spencer Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He also served as Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research from 2008-2012. Dr. Clemens received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of London and completed postdoctoral training as a Research Fellow in Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. As an Associate Professor in Medicine at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, he founded a master’s degree program in Biomedical Sciences. He also directed the Pathobiology and Molecular Medicine graduate program while a Professor of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati. In 2004, Dr. Clemens became director of the Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he established a Howard Hughes-funded Med-to-Grad doctoral program. Dr. Clemens’ research is focused on identification of the cellular and molecular mechanisms which control bone osteoblast activity. He has authored 140 original publications, and a number of editorials and book chapters. He has served as a member of the ASBMR Council and was the program co-chair for the 2002 Annual Meeting.
