Congratulations to Michael F. Holick, Ph.D., M.D., the ASBMR 2014 Louis V. Avioli Founders Awardee
Date: July 30, 2014
The Louis V. Avioli Founders Award honors an ASBMR member for fundamental contributions to bone and mineral basic research. The 2014 award will be presented to Michael F. Holick, Ph.D., M.D., at the ABMR 2014 Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas, USA, on Friday, September 12.
Dr. Holick is Professor of Medicine, Physiology and Biophysics at Boston University Medical Center. He isolated and identified 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 in human blood and the active form of vitamin D as 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, determined the mechanism for how vitamin D is synthesized in the skin and demonstrated the effects of aging, obesity, latitude, seasonal change, sunscreen use, skin pigmentation, and clothing on this vital cutaneous process. Dr. Holick has established global recommendations advising sunlight exposure as an integral source of vitamin D. He has increased awareness in the pediatric and medical communities regarding the vitamin D deficiency pandemic and its role in causing not only metabolic bone disease but increasing risk of children and adults developing common deadly cancers, autoimmune diseases, including type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis, infectious diseases, type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
