Appropriations Bill Includes Increase in NIH Funding for FY2014

    Date: January 15, 2014

Earlier this week, the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Committee released its fiscal year (FY) 2014 omnibus appropriations bill. The bill includes funding increases above the FY 2013 post-sequester level for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as well as the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Veterans Medical and Prosthetic Research Program:

    • NIH – $29.9 billion (approximately $1 billion above the FY 2013 post-sequester level)
    • NSF – $7.1 billion (approximately $200 million above the FY 2013 post-sequester level)
    • Veterans Medical and Prosthetic Research Program – $585.6 million (approximately $3 million above the FY 2013 post-sequester level)

The FY 2014 omnibus appropriations bill is expected to be voted on in the House followed by Senate consideration later this week. The bill will be brought to the floor in both chambers under an expedited process that should allow for quick passage.
