    Department of Defense 2012 Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program

    This program supports research in the following Congressionally mandated topic areas for 2012: Arthritis, Composite Tissue, Transplantation, Drug Abuse, Dystonia, Epilepsy, Food Allergies, Fragile X Syndrome, Hereditary Angioedema, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Interstitial Cystitis, Listeria Vaccine for Infectious Disease, Lupus, Malaria, Nanomedicine for Drug Delivery Science, Neuroblastoma, Osteoporosis and Related Bone Disease, Paget’s Disease, Polycystic Kidney Disease, Post-Traumatic Osteoarthritis, Scleroderma, Tinnitus, and Tuberculosis.

     

    This program has the following component awards:

    Clinical Trial Awards

    This award support the rapid implementation of clinical trials of novel interventions that have the potential to produce a significant impact on patient care in at least one of the Congressionally mandated topic areas for 2012. 

    Applicants must be at the Assistant Professor level or greater

    Maximum funding is $2.2 million dollars in direct costs (plus indirect costs) for a maximum performance period of 5 years.

    A Pre-application (letter of intent, LOI), which will determine eligibility for submitting the full application is due by June 6, 2012
, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern time.

June 26, 2012, 
at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time

    Clinical trials are expected to be initiated within 12 months of the award date.

    Discovery Award

    This award supports the exploration of a highly innovative new concept or untested theory in at least one of the Congressionally mandated topic areas for 2012.  

    Given the exploratory nature of these awards, inclusion of preliminary data is strongly discouraged.  Clinical trials will not be funded by this mechanism.

    Maximum funding is $125,000 in direct costs (plus indirect costs) with a performance period that cannot exceed 18 months

    Investigator-Initiated Research Award

    This award is intended to support studies that will make an important contribution toward research and/or patient care for a disease or condition in at least one of the Congressionally mandated topic areas for 2012.  Research projects may focus on any phase of research from basic laboratory research through translational research, including preclinical studies in animal models and human subjects, as well as correlative studies associated with an existing clinical trial. The rationale for a research idea may be derived from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, or a clinician’s first-hand knowledge of patients and anecdotal data. Applications must include relevant data that support the rationale for the proposed study. These data may be unpublished and/or from the published literature. Clinical trials will not be funded

    Maximum funding is $750,000 in direct costs (plus indirect costs) with a performance period that cannot exceed 3 years

    The program is open to all US investigators at the Assistant Professor level

    or above (or equivalent).

    Medical Technology/Therapeutic Development Award

    This award is a product-driven award intended to provide support for the translation of promising preclinical findings into products for clinical applications, including prevention, detection, diagnosis, patient care, and/or quality of life, in at least one of the Congressionally mandated topic areas for 2012.  Products in development should be responsive to the health care needs of military service members, veterans, and/or beneficiaries.

    Maximum funding is $1.5 million dollars in direct costs (plus indirect costs) with a performance period that cannot exceed 3 years

    The program is open to all US investigators at the Assistant Professor level or above (or equivalent).
