In Memoriam: ASBMR Member Loretta Spotila, Ph.D.

ASBMR member Loretta “Laurie” Spotila, Ph.D. recently passed away on January 21, 2015 at the age of 69. Dr. Spotila earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from SUNY Buffalo and was an expert in the field of molecular biology and genetics, making important discoveries about the genetic basis of osteoporosis and collagen diseases. After earning her doctorate and serving as a research associate at SUNY Buffalo for three years, she worked as a research associate and then assistant professor at Thomas Jefferson University from 1988 to 1999. In her spare time, Dr. Spotila was heavily involved with the Leartherback Trust, a conservation organization focused on leatherback sea turtules in Costa Rica, which was co-founded by her husband.
