This week, the Washington Post published an article on the current state of osteoporosis treatment and the fears of patients in following a course of treatment. The article features ASBMR Past-President Douglas P. Kiel, M.D., M.P.H., who discusses a variety of reasons for the decline in osteoporosis treatment, including cuts in Medicare reimbursement for DXA bone density tests, decreases in the number of physicians who provide bone density tests in their office, and perceived concerns about bisphosphonates. “We’re trying to get everyone — patients, doctors, insurance companies and the government — all on the same page making informed decisions,” Kiel says.
