Roberto Civitelli, M.D., Takes Office as President of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research

Washington, DC (October 8, 2013) – Roberto Civitelli, M.D., began his term as president of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), on October 8, 2013, the final day of the ASBMR 2013 Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.  ASBMR is the world’s leading scientific organization for bone health research.

“ASBMR continues to drive exploration of the myriad ways that bone interacts with other tissues, including muscle and fat, as well as the relationships between bone and diseases such as diabetes,” said Dr. Civitelli. “Perhaps our greatest goal is to encourage the translation of this research into better clinical care to improve the lives of patients worldwide.”

Dr. Civitelli is currently Chief of the Division of Bone and Mineral Diseases at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. His research focuses on the understanding of the cellular and molecular basis of the bone remodeling process, particularly how bone cells function in a social context, via intercellular communication through gap junctions and direct cell-to-cell contact.

A graduate of Siena University School of Medicine, Italy, Dr. Civitelli completed a fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism and was appointed faculty at Washington University in 1990. He received the ASBMR Fuller Albright Young Investigator Award in 1994 and was named Sydney M. and Stella H. Schoenberg Chair in Medicine in 2003.

In addition, Dr. Civitelli serves on the editorial board for Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine and Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Prior to stepping into the role of president-elect and now president of ASBMR, Dr. Civitelli served on the ASBMR Council from 2006 to 2009.

    About ASBMR
