ASBMR Members Met with 100 U.S. Congressional Offices to Support Research
Earlier this week, US-based members and patient advocates participated in the Society’s first ever Virtual Capitol Hill Day to advocate for continued investment in biomedical research. Over the course of two days, member volunteers virtually connected with their elected members of Congress and their staffs to urge them to increase federal funding to the NIH by $3.2 billion for FY2022, support the Research Investment to Spark the Economy (RISE) Act (H.R. 869/S.289) which would provide additional funding for clinical trials and laboratory research de-railed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and co-sponsor the re-introduction of a bill being introduced next month during National Osteoporosis Month that would increase the Medicare reimbursement rate for office-based dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). A total of 69 advocates representing 25 states and 52 congressional districts participated in 100 virtual meetings. Thank you to all our members that volunteered their time to make our first Virtual Capitol Hill Day a rousing success!

The ASBMR Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee invites you to join the next session of the ASBMR Member Spotlight Series on Wednesday, April 28 at 1:00 PM EDT. Tune in as Dr. Viral Shah, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, University of Colorado Denver presents on the topic: bone health in type 1 diabetes, and Dr. Karl Lewis, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at Cornell University, will present on his latest research. Following each presentation, there is an opportunity for Q&A and discussion with the audience. This monthly series aims to highlight the research of ASBMR members in a collaborative setting, and aims in particular to shine a light on the research being done by ASBMR members belonging to groups underrepresented in biomedical research (i.e., Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders). ALL members at all career levels are invited to participate in these sessions. This series will allow participants the opportunity to:
- Learn about the latest research from ASBMR members all around the world
- Form collaborations
- Expand your network
- Gain experience presenting an invited talk to an audience
- And so much more- all outside of the ASBMR Annual Meeting!
Register to attend the Member Spotlight Series here! To sign up to present, nominate a colleague to present or view the schedule of upcoming/past presentations, visit the ASBMR website!
