Dear Colleagues:
I hope each of you enjoyed the opportunity at the end of 2021 to relax with family and friends, and recharge for 2022. I wish each of you a very Happy New Year! Despite recent concerning headlines, I remain optimistic that we will again be able to come together in-person in 2022. As a reminder, this year’s ASBMR Annual Meeting will be held September 9-12 in Austin, Texas, USA.
I am excited about the innovations that the Annual Meeting Program Committee are planning for the September meeting and being led by Chair Raj Thakker, M.D., FRS and Co-Chairs Christa Maes, Ph.D. (Basic), Marc Wein, M.D., Ph.D. (Translational) and Emily Stein, M.D. (Clinical). I will be highlighting these exciting innovations progressively over the coming months, so stay tuned!
Planning for the pre-meeting symposium occurring one day prior to the Annual Meeting is also underway. This year’s symposium is entitled Rare Diseases: From Molecules and Mechanisms to Therapeutics. The Organizing Committee for this symposium is being led by Anna Teti, Ph.D., Erik Imel, M.D. and Frank Rauch, M.D. The Society is also working with the Rare Bone Disease Alliance on the planning of this event.
The abstract submission deadline for both the Annual Meeting and Pre-Meeting Symposium will be in the spring with the specific date to be announced in the coming weeks.
Over the past two years, the Society has invested significant resources to be there for our members when they needed us the most! This year will be no different. Just last month, the ASBMR Council approved the Society’s 2022 budget. The Society will focus its financial resources on key investments to position the organization for the future, as well as on impactful programs that continue to invest in our ASBMR members.
One important program that the leadership voted to expand is Annual Meeting travel grants for both early stage investigator and mid-career members. For 2022, the Society has doubled the amount of funding available. Our goal is simple. We want to enable as many members as possible to come together in-person at this year’s Annual Meeting to reconnect with colleagues and experience first-hand the exciting innovations to the program and advances in science.
We greatly value your support and engagement and thank you for your commitment to us in 2021. We ask that you continue to be a part of our special community and commit to making ASBMR your scientific home in 2022 and beyond. If you have not yet renewed your membership for 2022, I encourage you to visit the ASBMR website to do so. As a special offer to current members, you can now sign up for our discounted 3-year renewal option. If you have any membership questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us or contact asbmr@asbmr.org.
Sincerely, Peter Ebeling, AO, FRACP, MBBS, MD, FASBMR ASBMR President

Thank You for Donating to the ASBMR Fund for Research and Education in 2021!
Thank you to all of our members who generously contributed a donation to the ASBMR Fund for Research and Education in 2021. Because of your generosity throughout 2021, we were able to raise nearly $50,000 in member donations for the Fund! We are also pleased to announce ASBMR will match the $20,045 raised during our Giving Tuesday and 2021 End of Year fundraising campaigns. All donations received go directly back to our members through award programs and initiatives. Your continued support enables us to help our future scientists and physician scientists stay in the bone, mineral, and musculoskeletal health field! Thank you for your continued support for the fund in 2021! Stay tuned as we are excited to bring several innovative programs to you in 2022!

ASBMR just recently learned of the passing last summer of ASBMR member and leader Arnold “Arnie” Kahn, Ph.D. Dr. Kahn was a prominent member of the Society, serving as a Councilor between 1986-1989 and Secretary-Treasurer between 1991-1997. For his significant contributions to the bone and musculoskeletal field, Dr. Kahn received the prestigious ASBMR Shirley Hohl Service Award, in 2000. Prior to his passing, Dr. Kahn served as Professor Emeritus at University of California at San Francisco.
Dr. Kahn published more than 200 papers, abstracts, and book chapters on a wide range of topics, and mentored dozens of fellows and students. His most recent research interests were on aging and longevity, serving as a member of the Longevity Consortium at California Pacific Medical Center, Visiting Scientist at the Buck Institute for Age Research and serving on the editorial board of the Journal of Gerontology. Join us in recognizing Dr. Kahn’s contributions to our field by sharing a memory on the ASBMR website.
