Washington, DC (March 16, 2017) – The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) urges Congress to reject the proposed drastic cuts to medical and scientific research that were outlined in President Donald J. Trump’s initial federal budget plan this week. What the President has proposed would seriously derail the progress we have made and can continue to make through critical research and development that impacts the lives of millions of people in this country and abroad. Cutting the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by $5.8 billion, about a fifth of the NIH budget, brings it below 2003 funding levels at a time when we need most to be focused on the health and well-being of our nation. The proposed nearly 18 percent cut to programs in the Department of Health and Human Services, including $403 million from health professions training programs, would only exacerbate the problems we have adequate testing for, diagnosing, and treating diseases like osteoporosis that have spurred our Call to Action to address the treatment gap crisis.
We need to expand our efforts and spur the scientific innovation needed to boost the production of new research, trials, drugs, diagnostics and other treatments necessary to reduce the burden of disease, not jeopardizing the good work that we have already started and yet to begin.
ASBMR is working with Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology (FASEB) and our coalition partners to make sure that our voice is heard. It is critical that all US members of Congress hear from their constituents about the need to oppose this budget and support NIH research.
We urge you to reach out immediately to your Representative and Senators to voice your opposition to the proposed reduction in NIH funding by participating in our advocacy campaign. Our software will provide a letter and direct it to your Representative and Senators. All you need to do is provide your home address.
