A comparison of direct and calculated free 25(OH) Vitamin D levels in clinical populations.

The authors compared direct quantitation of circulating free 25(OH) vitamin D (D) levels with calculated free 25 (OH) D levels and their relationships to iPTH, a biomarker of D effect, in humans.  They found that directly measured free 25-OH concentrations were related to iPTH but calculated estimates were not. Hence, they conclude that the current algorithms to calculate free 25-OH vitamin D may not be accurate.
