The Effect of Vitamin D on Calcium Absorption in Older Women

The authors conducted a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial of postmenopausal Caucasian women with vitamin D insufficiency, Participants received different doses of vitamin D(3) or placebo for 1 yr. The main outcome was calcium absorption. They found that calcium absorption was more significantly related to serum 25OHD levels (R(2) = 0.50; P = 0.001) than the administered dose of vitamin D (R(2) = 0.47; P = 0.033).  They conclude that the increase in absorbed calcium of 6% that occurred on high doses of vitamin D was small.
