New AAOS Appropriate Use Criteria for Treatment, Rehabilitation of Elderly Patients with Hip Fractures

    Date: December 17, 2015

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) recently approved Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) for treatment and rehabilitation of elderly patients with hip fractures. The AUCs were created by AAOS in 2014, following the release of the Clinical Practice Guideline “Management of Hip Fractures in the Elderly,” which gave a broad overview of care options. The newly approved AUC, endorsed by ASBMR,  provides guidance for circumstances where surgery and rehabilitation are appropriate, and where expected health benefits exceed the expected health risks by a wide margin Review the AUC on the AAOS website.
