In Memoriam: B.E. Christopher Nordin, AO, M.D., FRCP, FRACP, DSc
Date: October 29, 2014
ASBMR is sad to announce the death of Australian physician Dr. Christopher Nordin, Royal Adelaide Hospital, South Australia. Dr. Nordin was an ASBMR member and worked on calcium metabolism and osteoporosis in an academic setting for more than 50 years. He was especially known for his emphasis on the relationship between calcium deficiency and osteoporosis, particularly in postmenopausal women, and he was the author of the current World Health Organization/Food and Agriculture Organization Dietary Calcium Recommendations, which have been adopted by Australia and New Zealand. His particular concerns focused on reducing the high hip fracture rate in residential care facilities by providing residents with adequate doses of vitamin D and calcium and for every post-menopausal woman to know her BMD to take preventative steps if it is on the low side. He believed that the key to this prevention program is high calcium intake. Please feel free to share a kind note or fond memory of Dr. Nordin on the ASBMR Community page.
