Date: May 06, 2011
We mourn the loss of longtime ASBMR member Dr. Maureen E. Owen, who passed away on April 5, 2011. Dr. Owen was a leader in the field and beloved by all, not only for her scientific greatness, but also for her kindness and mentorship. Dr. Owen’s scientific achievements were many and varied, most notably her pioneering studies on bone marrow stromal stem cells. Dr. Owen was an original editorial board member of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research (JBMR). She also played major leadership roles in numerous other bone-related scientific societies, including the Bone and Tooth Society (Bone Research Society), the European Calcified Tissue Society (ECTS), and the Parathyroid Hormone Conferences and International Conference on Calcium-Regulating Hormones (predecessors to the International Bone and Mineral Society).
Dr. Owen will be greatly missed by her many friends and colleagues throughout the world. ASBMR members Pamela Robey, James Triffitt and Paolo Bianco have prepared a brief narrative highlighting Dr. Owen’s career which has been posted to the ASBMR web site.
