    NIH Director Highlights the Importance of Basic Research

    In the most recent issue of Science, Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), commented on the importance of basic biomedical research. He notes that in a time of severe budget constraints, “Americans need to know that today’s basic research is the engine that powers tomorrow’s therapeutic discoveries” and adds that because the private sector cannot afford to conduct this kind of research, “the nation must support a broad portfolio of basic research.”  Read the full article.
