Congratulations to the ASBMR 2014 Gideon A. Rodan Awardee, R. Graham Russell, M.D., Ph.D.
Date: August 20, 2014
The Gideon A. Rodan Excellence in Mentorship Award is given annually in recognition of outstanding support provided by a senior scientist who has helped promote the independent careers of young investigators in bone and mineral metabolism. Congratulations to this year’s award recipient, R. Graham Russell, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Russell is currently Professor of Musculoskeletal Pharmacology at the Universities of Oxford and Sheffield, where he has led research in bone biology and disease over several decades. He graduated with a degree in biochemistry from Cambridge, earned a Ph.D. on pyrophosphate metabolism at Leeds and an M.D. at Oxford and was then a Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. His early work with Herbert Fleisch in Switzerland led to the discovery of the biological effects of bisphosphonates, which he then helped to develop as the leading drugs used worldwide for treating bone resorption disorders. Later studies revealed how bisphosphonates act within cells, especially as inhibitors of the mevalonate pathway. In his leadership roles, he has nurtured the careers of countless young scientists and clinicians, many of whom now hold senior positions in the UK and internationally. Dr. Russell previously received the William F. Neuman Award and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of London.
