    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Washington, D.C.) – Teresita M. Bellido, Ph.D., has taken office as the new president of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), the world’s leading scientific organization for bone health research.

"I am honored to serve ASBMR, its members and the people who benefit from bone and mineral research worldwide," Bellido stated. “ASBMR serves a critical role as the leading professional, scientific and medical society for basic, translational and physician scientists and clinical investigators studying bone and musculoskeletal related diseases. ASBMR is dedicated to translating the research to health care and clinical practice."

Dr. Bellido is a tenured professor of Anatomy, Cell Biology and Physiology at the Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana, and a research career scientist of the US Veterans Administration. Under Dr. Bellido’s leadership, the Bellido Laboratory investigates the mechanisms of signal transduction among and within bone cells, with particular emphasis on the biology of osteocytes. The laboratory employs in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo models to study how hormones and mechanical force affect the function and life span of bone and muscle cells; and the role of osteocytes in cancer in bone. Dr. Bellido is also an adjunct professor in the IU Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and on faculty in the Graduate School of IU and Purdue University. Prior to her current roles, she held numerous research and faculty positions at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). Dr. Bellido will return to the UAMS School of Medicine in 2020 as professor and chair of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics.

In addition to serving on the ASBMR Council as President-Elect this past year, Dr. Bellido has served on the ASBMR Education, Women in Bone and Mineral Research and Development Committees, and was a recipient of the ASBMR 2015 Paula Stern Achievement Award and 2018 Gideon A. Rodan Excellence in Mentorship Award. Originally from Argentina, Dr. Bellido received her undergraduate, doctoral and post-doctoral degrees and fellowships from the Universidad National del Sur, Argentina and Veterans Administration Medical Center-Indiana University. Dr. Bellido will serve as President of the ASBMR until September 2020.
