• Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee

    The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee will ensure that ASBMR embodies all facets of diversity (inclusiveness, mutual respect, multiple perspectives, and equitable opportunities) so that all members, irrespective of race, ethnicity, nationality, cultural background, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, age, income, physical and mental ability thrive in the bone and mineral research field.


    The immediate goals and charges of the ASBMR Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee are as follows:

    • Increase and maintain diversity within the ASBMR membership. Given the historical and present-day oppression and disenfranchisement in the United States of America, people of color are underrepresented in science, particularly in the bone and mineral research field. The ASBMR DEI committee will focus to increase the number of members defined as underrepresented minorities using the National Institutes of Health (NIH) 
      • Identify avenues in which to recruit new ASBMR
      • The DEI committee will leverage diversity and inclusion initiatives to address recruitment, engagement, and retention of a diverse Society
    • Provide access to diversity, equity and inclusion resources and training to ASBMR members.
      • The DEI committee will work with the Education Committee to provide content to the ASBMR community on the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in science, as well as content specifically catered to the needs of underrepresented members.
    • Promote career advancement of  the ASBMR's diverse members through professional opportunities and leadership positions within the Society.
      • The DEI committee will increase diverse representation in governance and leadership roles by promoting visibility and participation of diverse members.
      • The DEI committee will promote award, leadership, and career development opportunities to underrepresented members of the
      • The DEI committee will track equity regarding racial and ethnic diversity, career stage, sex, and national origin for attendance at annual meetings, awards, and leadership
      • The DEI committee will understand and meet the varied professional needs of the diverse membership with respect to existing and new programs and services.
      • The DEI committee will advocate for the needs of a diverse Society membership to Council and build partnerships with key organizations to support activities that enhance DEI efforts.
    • Increase awareness of, and advance research to address health disparities in musculoskeletal disorders among diverse populations
      • The DEI committee will work with the Education Committee and the Annual Meeting Program Committee to highlight research involving sex, race, and ethnic differences in the diagnosis of, prevalence in, management of, and outcomes associated with musculoskeletal disorders.
