DXA Legislation Introduced in the Senate!
Late last week, Senator Susan Collins (ME-R) and Senator Bill Cardin (MD-D) introduced S. 1943, the Increasing Access to Osteoporosis Testing for Medicare Beneficiaries Act of 2021. The legislation would set a floor of $98 for Medicare reimbursement of office-based Medicare DXA scans. As was reported in last week’s E-news, the corresponding bill in the House, H.R. 3517 was introduced a few days prior. Over the past decade, Medicare reimbursement for DXA bone density tests in physician offices has declined a shocking 72 percent. Declining reimbursement rates have fueled a loss of 10,000 providers which led to 5.8 million fewer women having a DXA test since 2009. This reduction in testing has especially impacted rural and underserved communities.

The ASBMR Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee invites you to join the next session of the ASBMR Member Spotlight Series on Wednesday, June 30 at 1:00 PM EDT. Tune in as Noriyoshi Kurihara, DDS, Ph.D., Research Professor at Indiana University, presents on the contribution of osteoclast-IGF1 and osteocyte on Paget lesions formation in Paget's bone disease, and Jon Paul Elizondo, Ph.D., Texas A&M University, College Station, presents jump training and sclerostin antibody treatment as preventive countermeasures to microgravity-induced bone loss. Following each presentation, there is an opportunity for Q&A and discussion with the audience. This monthly series aims to highlight the research of ASBMR members in a collaborative setting, and aims in particular to shine a light on the research being done by ASBMR members belonging to groups underrepresented in biomedical research (i.e., Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders). ALL members at all career levels are invited to participate in these sessions. Register to attend the Member Spotlight Series here!
