ASBMR Updates & Announcements
ASBMR is pleased to announce the results of the recent membership election for Officer and Councilor positions. These individuals will begin their three-year terms immediately following the 2016 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

The Frederic C. Bartter Award is given to an ASBMR member in recognition of outstanding clinical investigation in disorders of bone and mineral metabolism. The 2016 ASBMR Frederic C. Bartter Award will be presented to Eric S. Orwoll, M.D. at the ASBMR 2016 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, on Saturday, September 17, 2016.
Eric Orwoll is a Professor of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University. He has been active in basic, clinical, and epidemiological research in bone biology, with a major focus in age related musculoskeletal change, including the epidemiology, etiology and therapy of osteoporosis and sarcopenia in men. His basic/translational interests include the genetics and proteomics of aging. He has been the principal investigator for many projects supported by the NIH, VA and foundations, and is the author of more than 400 peer reviewed publications, reviews, books, and book chapters.
The ASBMR Paula Stern Achievement Award annually recognizes a woman in the bone field who has made significant scientific achievements and who has promoted the professional development/advancement of women in the field. The 2016 ASBMR Paula Stern Achievement Award will be presented to Merry Jo Oursler, Ph.D. at the ASBMR 2016 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, on Saturday, September 17, 2016.
Merry Jo Oursler, Ph.D., graduated from Washington University in St. Louis Missouri and received postdoctoral training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. She was a faculty member of the Biology Department at the University of Minnesota Duluth (1996-2003). Dr. Oursler is currently a Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Endocrinology, Diabetes, Metabolism, and Nutrition. Her research on bone cell biology and interactions between osteoclasts and other bone cells has received funding from the NIH and the U.S. Department of Defense since 1993. She has mentored many undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, junior faculty, and short-term international scholars.
Join us for the 2016 ASBMR Town Hall Meeting and Reception to learn more about ASBMR and meet with ASBMR leadership. Dr. Stephen I. Katz, M.D., Ph.D., National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) Director, will provide updates on NIH and NIAMS funding trends and opportunities, as well as NIH’s interest in identifying and addressing gaps and challenges in fracture prevention.
The ASBMR Town Hall Meeting will be held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Room A402/403 on Sunday, September 18 from 6:00 to 7:00pm.
