ASBMR Updates & Announcements
“Fearing Drugs’ Rare Side Effects, Millions Take Their Chances With Osteoporosis,” written by Gina Kolata, was published on the front page of the New York Times this morning. This timely article comes after an urgent call by ASBMR, NBHA, and NOF stressing the importance of taking action to treat patients with osteoporosis while weighing the risk for rare side effects associated with the medication. Recent research published in JBMR revealed that millions of Americans suffering from osteoporosis are going unscreened and untreated leading to a rise in repeated fractures was highlighted in the New York Times piece, including the articles “Trends in Media Reports, Oral Bisphosphonate Prescriptions, and Hip Fractures 1996–2012: An Ecological Analysis” and “Osteoporosis Medication Use After Hip Fracture in U.S. Patients between 2002 and 2011.”
To continue the discussion on this important subject in your community, we urge you to coordinate with your institution’s communications office to reach out to your local news stations and newspapers to offer yourself as a subject matter expert to speak on the current data, the risks versus benefits of treatment, and let them know that the world experts on osteoporosis will come together at the ASBMR Annual Meeting in September in Atlanta, GA, USA to discuss the latest research. For any questions on getting involved, please contact Lynn Mirigian at lmirigian@asbmr.org.

Fowlkes, has been published on the topic: “Diabetic Bone Disease: Basic and Translational Research and Clinical Applications.”. The United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) and Bone and Joint Canada are dedicated to increasing research of musculoskeletal diseases. The USBJI has developed a grant mentoring program to provide early-career investigators an opportunity to work with experienced researchers in our field to assist them in securing funding and other survival skills required for pursuing an academic career. This program is open to promising junior faculty, senior fellows or post-doctoral researchers nominated by their department or division chairs. It is also open to senior fellows or residents that are doing research and have a faculty appointment in place or confirmed. Basic and clinical investigators, without or with training awards (including K awards) are invited to apply. Investigators selected to take part in the program attend two workshops, 12-18 months apart, and work with faculty between workshops to develop their grant applications. The next workshop is scheduled to take place November 4-6, 2016 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The unique aspect of this program is the opportunity for attendees to maintain a relationship with a mentor until their application is funded.
Deadline to apply for the Fall 2016 Workshop is July 15, 2016. To apply for this program, please visit their website here.
